Free disk space analyzers for Mac: an honest list
You can see what fills your Mac's disk without paying: macOS has a storage tool built in, and GrandPerspective and Disk Inventory X draw a map of your disk for free. This page says what each one shows and where it stops, so you can pick one and stay with it. We sell a paid app, DiskSphere, and it comes last. Prices were read on the apps' own pages on 2 October 2026 (US store).
| App | Price | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| macOS Storage settings | Included in macOS | Categories, a list of large files, a file browser |
| GrandPerspective | Free as a direct download; $2.99 on the App Store | Treemap |
| Disk Inventory X | Free (GPL) | Treemap |
| OmniDiskSweeper | See its page | A list of files, largest to smallest |
| DaisyDisk | $9.99, with a free trial | Interactive map |
| DiskSphere | €3, one-time | 3D sphere in seven shapes, plus a sunburst chart and a treemap |
What does macOS already give me for free?
macOS gives you the Storage settings, and for many full disks that is enough. Choose Apple menu › System Settings, click General, then click Storage. A bar shows your disk by category. Click the Info button next to Documents to see your large files, your downloads and a file browser with the storage each folder uses.
The limit: the Storage settings show lists, one at a time. They draw no map of the disk, and they do not open the System Data category. The steps are in How to find large files on a Mac.
Which free apps draw a map of my disk?
GrandPerspective and Disk Inventory X both draw a treemap for free. A treemap fills the window with rectangles: each file is a rectangle, and a larger file gets a larger rectangle.
- GrandPerspective is free when you download it from its SourceForge page. The same app costs $2.99 on the App Store. It is open source, under the GNU General Public License.
- Disk Inventory X is free and released under the GPL. It also draws treemaps.
The limit of both: the treemap is the one map they draw. If a treemap reads well to you, either app answers the question “what fills my disk?”, and you can stop here.
What does OmniDiskSweeper do?
OmniDiskSweeper shows a list where the other two show a map. It shows the files on your drive, largest to smallest, and lets you move them to the Trash or open them. Pick it if you prefer a sorted list to a picture. The Omni Group publishes it; check its page for the current terms, because we could not confirm a price there.
Where do the paid apps fit?
Two paid apps draw the disk in other ways, and you need one only if you want that drawing.
- DaisyDisk costs $9.99 and has a free trial. It shows your disk as an interactive map.
- DiskSphere costs €3, one-time. It draws every file as a point on a 3D sphere, in seven shapes: full sphere, sphere, disk, islands, time, orbit and galaxy. The same app has a sunburst chart and a treemap. It searches files by name, type or size, and it moves what you choose to the Trash.
DiskSphere runs on macOS only. For the full table, see DiskSphere and the other disk maps for Mac.
How do I choose?
Choose by the picture you read most easily; every tool here measures the same disk.
- You want a first answer in one minute: the macOS Storage settings.
- You want one map of the whole disk, free: GrandPerspective or Disk Inventory X.
- You want a list sorted by size: OmniDiskSweeper.
- You want the disk in 3D, or a sunburst chart and a treemap in one app: DiskSphere.
Whichever you pick, move files to the Trash and empty it later, when you are sure. If the biggest block turns out to be System Data, read System Data on Mac before you delete anything.
